In the late 1930s, Japan launched a full-scale invasion of China, and even small cities like Guningcheng were not spared from the war. Under the chaos of Japanese imperialism, warlords, wealthy merchants, and gangsters colluded to exploit the city's wealth, turning people's lives into a living hell. Ouyang Shanchuan (played by Liao Fan), a Chinese language teacher at a local women's school, is actually a member of the Communist underground. Losing faith in the revolution in such turbulent times, he longs to leave this place of sorrow. Meanwhile, the Japanese army infiltrates Guningcheng and begins a brutal massacre. This reignites Ouyang's anger and rekindles his passion for the revolution. He meets a proletarian worker, Sidao Feng (played by Yang Shuo), and together they form a secret anti-Japanese organization.
